My “5” Do’s for a Dinner Party
My “5” Do’s for a Dinner Party
May 23, 2025

1. Start early!
Something I always used to stress about was trying to do everything so it would all be finished at the same time, or not wanting to get myself ready too early. However, I’ll tell you right now: start early. Anything you can prep the day before, or even a couple of days before, do it and get it out of the way. For example, decorate your table as early as possible. Depending on my menu, I’ll often make the dessert the day before or early in the morning on the day of.
2. Pick a theme
Picking a theme is so helpful when organizing and planning a dinner party. It influences the aesthetic and tablescape, and it can even help guide your menu planning. Your theme doesn’t have to be strict. Remember, it’s your dinner party, so there’s no right or wrong. Check out my blog with 10 Dinner Party Themes for Spring and Summer for ideas.
3. Use what you have
Trust me, I used to want to buy an entirely new tablescape for every themed dinner party I hosted. But until I have a hosting closet and a house with enough storage, that’s just not necessary. You don’t need a new set of plates for each party. Focus on having core versatile pieces like white plates and simple tableware, and bring the fun in through accessories, like flowers, table runners, or even fruit. If you’re wondering where to start, take a peek at my What’s in the Table of Friends Hosting Kit blog to see what essentials I have.
4. Include a personal touch
Add something that reflects you or your guests. This could be handwritten name cards, a signature cocktail, or even a playlist with songs that bring back memories. These little details make your dinner party feel thoughtful, cozy, and unforgettable.
5. Have fun!
Hosting can be stressful, from making sure the food tastes good and is ready on time to ensuring your guests are having a great time. But don’t forget to enjoy yourself too. The whole point is to connect, share memories, and laugh. Pour yourself a glass of wine and relax.
